Scholarships for Degrees in Advanced Practice Registered Nursing
If you’re at the point where you’re looking at scholarships for degrees that will lead you into advanced clinical practice, administration or other advanced roles, then you already understand it’s a good long-term career investment. Strong demand, independence, better paychecks… what’s not to like about being an advanced clinician or administrator?
All that comes at a cost, however—the cost of the education you’ll need to be licensed as an APRN or to find your niche in executive leadership. The master’s degree you need to get you there will set you back to the tune of around $17,000 a year according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and that’s for in-state tuition… don’t even ask about out-of-state. And you can’t even start thinking about that master’s degree until you have shelled out for a bachelor’s level education, which averages more than $25,000 a year.
For most American families, going out-of-pocket for those costs is out of the question. If you’re on your own and paying the bills with a full-time job, forget about it. You can take on loans to bridge the gap, but say goodbye to that independence you were hoping for… you’ll be on the hook for years paying them down.
But you have a different vision for yourself, which is why you’re here, looking at scholarship options. Brilliant!
How Can You Qualify For A Nursing Program Scholarship?
Scholarships offer money for schooling you won’t have to pay back, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any strings attached. Every grant has certain qualifications or obligations you’ll need to meet to even be considered for the award.
These criteria are selected and evaluated by the grantor. There are several common categories, and occasionally some really wild requirements tacked on. This can be a blessing or a curse: there will plenty of scholarships you just won’t qualify for… but they could also mean having virtually no competition for others.
Common Criteria
The most common criteria are basic attempts to establish your qualifications, including:
- What type of degree you are seeking
- Your enrollment status
- Grade Point Average or SAT scores
- Financial status
Scholarship committees don’t want to waste time or money on applicants who aren’t serious about APRN work. So the common criteria are used to filter out students who are unlikely to succeed even with the contribution or who do not need the additional assistance.
There are also commonly restrictions designed to prevent favoritism among the selectors, such as anti-nepotism requirements.
Indications of Ambition
Many scholarships look for signs you are going to make the most of the opportunity they offer. They want people serious about the degree and the field of advanced practice registered nursing in general. So they might ask for evidence such as:
- Volunteer experience
- Essays on your goals
- Letters of recommendation
- Other extracurricular work in the field
Group or Class Membership
A high percentage of scholarships are funded with the express purpose of advancing certain groups or classes of student, particularly those who may previously have been underrepresented in the field. If you belong to one of those groups or classes, you have access to a whole range of options that most students won’t enjoy.
Some of these are groups you can join, such as the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN). Their $500 Career Mobility scholarship is available to anyone who has been a member for at least a year.
Others are classes you are born into; the American Assembly for Men in Nursing Scholarship, predictably, is available only for men. It can put $1,000 to $1,500 (undergraduate versus graduate levels) in your pocket for school without having to compete against the predominantly female cohorts in the field.
Location or University
Scholarships are often designed to channel students into certain geographic areas that may be underserved.
Frequently, scholarships are endowed by either colleges or graduates who naturally want to encourage attendance at their institution. The Grand Canyon University, for example, offers a generous nursing scholarship that amounts to a 10 percent discount on tuition… only at GCU, of course.
Another example, with a broader selection of schools, is the CastleBranch Graduate Nursing Student Academy Scholarship. Offered by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in the amount of $2,500, it simply requires you to attend a school that is an AACN member.
Commitment
There are a number of scholarships that do require that you pay them back—but not in cash. Instead, options such as the U.S. government funded NURSECorps program offer extremely generous packages—usually full-ride scholarships—in return for your commitment to serve for a specified period at an eligible medical facility after graduation.
In a variation on this theme, there are also many scholarships that support only certain APRN roles. The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses Scholarship, for instance, only accepts applicants with an interest in becoming nurse-anesthetists. It also requires another common sort of commitment, although one that you demonstrate before you even apply: you have to currently be a licensed RN.
Where To Start Your Search for Nursing Degree Scholarships
There are two schools of thought on how to start your scholarship search.
The first is to go big: look for high dollar value scholarships and put most of your efforts into creating great applications for them. A single success can cover most of your tuition.
The down side to this is that big numbers draw a lot of competition. Those big-ticket scholarships have a lot of competition.
The second approach is to look at your niches. There are not, for example, all that many students who are eligible for the Jean Charley-Call Nursing Scholarship for Hopi Indian students. If you happen to be one of them, you have a better shot at that $1,000 than you do at some of the much larger, but less restrictive, awards.
Either way, you’ll find many scholarships of all sizes that originate from the following sources:
Industry and Professional Groups
ASPN, AACN, and the AMSN, all mentioned above, are just a handful of the professional organizations that offer scholarship funding for members or others interested in the profession. The American Red Cross, for instance, offers the Jane Delano Student Nurse Scholarship each year for volunteers or employees. The National American Arab Nurses Association has between $500 and $1000 scholarships for candidates with an Arab heritage.
There are dozens of such organizations and many millions of dollars that flow from them every year, so they are an excellent place to start your search.
Universities
Schools themselves represent another major source of scholarship funding. In many cases, they receive endowments for particular programs, such as the John and Wendy Boardman Amenity Foundation Palliative Care Scholarship at the University of Iowa College of Nursing.
If you already know what college you hope to attend, this is an easy call. Once again, you only compete against the subset of students also attending that particular university, instead of the entire national cohort. And a stop at the school’s financial assistance office will reap dividends whether you get that particular award or not, since they will always have up-to-date information on what other scholarships you may be eligible for.
Hospitals and Health Services
The NURSECorps scholarship is only one example of many awards offered by governments and hospitals intent on bolstering their future workforces. These are often quite generous awards and yet some still have only a handful of potential candidates, upping your odds if you are among them.
The Indian Health Service Scholarship program for instance, seeks to fund American Indian and Alaska Natives attending nursing or medical schools in return for a commitment to serve with IHS after graduation. These grants can pay for nearly all your expenses through the entire graduate or undergraduate program and are broadly available for qualified candidates.
In many cases, hospitals are seeking to advance the professional knowledge of their own staff in these roles. The Hubert & Grace Jones Scholarship at Reid Hospital in the amount of $800 is available only to current employees who have graduated from a particular set of local schools.
With enough diligence and effort, a look through our list of scholarships here is sure to net you at least some assistance in getting through your master’s in nursing program.
Comprehensive List of Nursing Scholarships (National and State-Based)
Here they are – all the scholarship opportunities we could dig up for nursing students with their sights set on advanced roles in clinical practice, administration, nurse education, informatics and more.
Just because these scholarships are designed for nursing students on track to eventually earn a master’s or doctorate doesn’t mean they are exclusively for graduate students. In fact, you’ll find plenty of scholarships here for undergrads preparing to transition to a traditional master’s program, as well as scholarships for bridge programs and other non traditional options that streamline the undergraduate and graduate courses RNs need to fast-track the path to becoming an advanced clinician, administrator, or any other advanced role.
